Hunter Thompson accuses Edwin Muskie of Ibogaine Use
In 1972, Gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson wrote a satirical article for Rolling Stone claiming Democratic presidential candidate Edwin Muskie was addicted to ibogine. Thompson wrote:
"Not much has been written about the Ibogaine Effect as a serious factor in the Presidential Campaign, but toward the end of the Wisconsin primary race -- about a week before the vote -- word leaked out that some of Muskie's top advisers had called in a Brazilian doctor who was said to be treating the candidate with 'some kind of strange drug' that nobody in the press corps had ever heard of." This story was picked up and repeated as though it were a factual charge by mainstream press. This may have contributed in small part to Muskie's failure to secure the Democratic nomination for president.
